How to Support Your Child With Fractions

Concrete ways to help primary children understand fractions — from simple parts of a whole to equivalence.

Start with equal parts

Before symbols, fold paper, cut toast, or share counters into equal groups. Children need to feel what “fair shares” means.

Use the language of halves, thirds, and quarters in ordinary talk. Formal fraction notation can follow once the idea is secure.

Fractions of amounts

Finding one quarter of 12, for example, connects fractions to division. Draw the amount, circle equal groups, then write the calculation.

Keep numbers friendly at first. Success with small amounts builds readiness for denser Year 4 and Year 5 work.

Moving toward equivalence

Equivalent fractions are easier when children see matching shaded regions. Only then introduce multiplying or dividing numerator and denominator by the same number.
