What Year 1 maths typically looks like

Year 1 sits at the start of Key Stage 1. Children usually work with numbers within 20, build number bonds, practise simple addition and subtraction, and begin naming shapes and comparing lengths or amounts.

Sessions should feel playful and brief. Many Year 1 learners still need an adult nearby to read instructions and celebrate small steps.

Number bonds and part–whole thinking

Number bonds to 10 are a common Year 1 focus. Part–whole models help children see that 3 and 7 make 10 without relying only on rote chanting.
